Oil in an 03 6.0..

A couple of newbie questions-

Is a diesel odor "normal" in diesel oil? Or might that be a sign of a leaking something?

How long does oil typically take to get black? Regular oil, not synthetic.

Would it be good or bad to swap to synthetic with 130k mi on the engine?

1. Dont know for sure
2. As soon as you crank it after a fresh oil change .
3. I think it would be fine . But from what i have been told its not wise to switch from synthetic to convential oil.

I have run synthetic ever since I bought my truck...it's the best for the engine. I use Shell Rotella Synthetic oil...its a little more expensive than everything else, but it's worth it. All my friends around here run it also in their PSD's. As far as the diesel odor, you're gonna have that no matter what...or did you mean the oil itself smelled like that?

The oil smelled like diesel. The level seemed a little high, but I didnt check it after the oil change at the dealership so...no idea if it is just that they overfilled (likely given the lube tech..) or if perhaps I got a leaky injector.

I am thinking maybe i'll swap to the synthetic.....just because its an older engine..better late than never right?

I didnt realize the rotella was synthetic....I can get that pretty cheap. I'll swap the oil out soon. Mine is filthy and its been about 4k miles anyways.

Not all Rotella is synthetic. You can get regular or synthetic.
