Exhaust

On the way home tonight herd a pop like a seal went and now have an exhaust leak from what appears to be from left rear of engine. Took a quick look and could not tell exactly ware it is from. I have a 04 f-250 with the 6.0. Just wondering if any one has had this problem. Or have any ideas about what went pop to cause the leak. Thanks

Exhaust

Exhaust-imageuploadedbyautoguide1362706708.540557.jpg

^The flex pipe going to the turbo. Very common. This flex portion was completely snapped off. Even a slight crack and they will hiss and you will loose low end power. When the engine is cold try putting ur hand around the exhaust connections, if tere is a leak u will find it.

Re: Exhaust

Thanks. Hope to get the truck on a lift today to check it out. Is that pipe hard to get out?

Exhaust

If you have removed the turbo before then it should be a breeze, considering all the bolts in the flanges are not rusted into one peice. PBlaster those bolts a few times before working on it.

Its not that hard, pull the turbo, undo the bolts from the y pipe at the manifold. Separate the y pipe from passenger side up pipe(egr pipe). Rotate it out and your done. Yours being an 04 means that it may have heat shields on it. If it does the up pipe for 03's and 04's are more expensive because of the heat shields. I bought an 05 and later y pipe, used exhaust wrap to cover the y pipe and used worm o clamps to secure the removed heat shields from the original y pipe. With it wrapped and having the shields keeps it so cool back there, that I can reach back there with my bare hand all the way to the ICP sensor, as long as I dont get near the turbo exhaust flange, with no worries about getting burned. The exhaust wrap will also help with turbo spool up, as more heat is kept inside the pipes.

Exhaust

^^ very good discription. Only thing i would add is you might want to go the aftermarket route, a couple sites here will remove the flex bellows and install stainless braided flex pipes that will last much longer eliminating the problem that you had in the first place. Just my .02

Re: Exhaust

Thanks for the info. Did not get a chance to the truck on the lift yesterday. Hopefully today wont be so busy. If the turbo has to come out. How much extra work needs to be done to install egr deleleat?
Would this be a good time?

Having the turbo and y pipe out would he a very good time for the egr cooler delete. Although the intake will have to be pulled because the egr delete replaces the coolant passage from the oil cooler back to the bottom side of the intake. Replacement of the passenger side up pipe without the egr outlet will be easier to do at this time also.
