Coolant appearing?

When my head gaskets were replaced and studs done the mechanic put on a sinister coolant filter that had a lot of problems with leaking. I recently changed the coolant filter. After 800 miles I filled the fuel tank yesterday and didn't check oil and coolant level til this morning. The coolant reservoir was dry as a bone. So I was worried I had blown another head gasket or the coolant filter was leaking again. I added almost 5 quarts of coolant to get to the min line. I just drove 40 miles and popped the hood to check the coolant level and the tank is way overfull almost to the cap. Anyone have ideas, I need to drive 350 miles tonight taking my son back to his mother and back to the beach tonight?

there was probably air in the system from running it low and refilling. pressure test the system to find the source of the leak
