6.0 stuttering???

my buddy has an 05 f-250 psd. it is bone stock with 40k on it and never had a problem with anything. jusy the other day it started idling rough but on occasionally and only when he is sitting still. it would just like idle up and down constantly till he reved it up. he took it to the local garage (not ford garage) and they hooked it up to the computer but nothing came up so they thot maybe the cat was clogged. he tows a trailer alot and the truck runs fine when you are out going its just sitting still. any ideas? also he is afraid to take his cat off b/c warrenty, but i told him i didnt think that the exhaust should effect the warrenty, am i right?

there are a couple of things that could cause his concern and the cat wouldnt be one of them, if it were mine i would look at the egr valve , and also at the icp sensor, either way it should be covered under warranty, for the most part the dealer shouldnt really care if it has a cat or not but cant speak for the dealer he is taking it to

you can just remove the egr valve to inspect it , as far as the icp sensor goes , no visual inspection, need to get a scanner on it and monitor voltage , ive been running in to some icp sensors with minor voltage spikes but no check engine lights , several different driveability symptoms , if this vehicle is under warranty just take it in, being a dealer tech i get more aggravated when someone has already been in there tampering around , makes my job worse to diag the problem sometimes but what you do is up to you

two bolts and a connector , take a pair of big channel locks and twist and pull, see if its clogged or stuck open , if you can see daylight between the valve and the housing it really needs to be replaced
