Long crank cold start? Runs perfect after?
Just bought this truck last week. Its been 20's a couple days but does this even if 40. Clarify yes ive waited for glows to heat up. If i drive to work and it sits 8hrs. Once i try to start it, i have let it crank for about 8 sec once. But i dont want a new starter so i dont go longer than 5 sec. Then i wait the try again after a few sec and then it starts about 3 sec in. Runs pefect at idle and driving and hot starts. Just the first essential cold start is really prolonged. Ive read alot about things like flash FICM, STC fitting, hpop, and ipr valve but thats alot of options. Btw truck is bone stock 169k new egr and cooler 10k ago from dealer have prev owners receipt. New bats too so i

To me that is not that bad. Anything more than 10 sec is not good. What type of oil do you run? Have you load tested your batteries to see if you have at least 900 cranking amps? That would be the first thing I do, is load test the batteries. Check your ficm to see if it is puting out 47v. Do you have a monitor?

It should fire in or about < 5 seconds, if the pre-start procedure is followed. If it sat for weeks, it may be longer. There is a sticky about this, please read it. In any case, make sure you are using the correct filters for starters. The correct oil filter and cap are essential to a normal crank-time. Fuel filters (both) would be a given as well. Once you have done this, if it still continues you need to trouble-shoot.
Like the filters, the next best thing you need is a monitor. A few good combinations in the stickies. Check the posts on DashBoss for an example. Last edited by twoicebergs; 12-11-2012 at 06:09 PM. Reason: Monitor |

Rotella T5 oil not even 300miles on change. New fuel filters too motocraft of course. would have to get bats tested, and no monitor yet.

Do me a favor in the morning watch your low oil pressure gauge on dash, let me now if while your cranking it if it starts right after oil gauge comes up or if the gauge comes up and it starts 4 or 5 seconds after it comes up! so keep cranking it until it starts and give me time in seconds!

Alright this morning it was 21deg out. I had it pluged in and i watched the oil pressure gauge. It started after 4-5 sec then the oil pressure went up. Ill check again after work where i have no plug.

Check your FICM voltages. Key on engine off, first thing in the morning.

Not to high jack but mine does the same thing. Motorcraft oil filter and cap rotella t6. Not sure on fuel filters tho? Ficm and batteries are good. The truck will start then the oil pressure gauge on dash will go up. Any advice?
