Turbo High Pitch Whistle- New Turbo
I just put a new reman turbo on this weekend after finding a bent shaft on my old one. The new turbo has a high pitch to it from 8 psi and up, I checked for leaks and can't find any. I have been looking and have read that it could be my up pipe, but the turbo is building steady boost the whole time it's going...Does it just need to wear itself in? Or do I have a leak I'm not finding?

You might have gotten an '03 turbo. I'm sure you don't want to take it back out but if the turbine wheel has 10 blades on it then it is supposed to whistle. The'05+ turbo has 13 blade turbine wheel and is a lot quieter.

Huckstorf Diesel Reman Garrett Stage 1 Turbo ???????????
I'm assuming this is the turbo you installed? Might be giving you the same whistle the Garrett Powermax does. |

Yes, this is the turbo. Does the Powermax have a higher pitch sound?

Yes, I put on the Powermax, and the whistle is a lot louder than stock.
As thomaslord84 shared, the stock 03's were different than the 04-07 turbos. Some folks have gone to the 03 turbos just for that sound. For some reason I can't get youtube to play. Do a search on youtube for "Garrett Powermax turbo whistle" and you will get the idea. |

Mine has more of a screaming sound than that. That sounds like the whistle is higher than stock, i agree. What would be causing mine to scream?

Can you take a video of it?

Will do tonight on my way home from work.

When you do, send it to the company that sent you this turbo.
They probably have the answer. ( I am interested to hear the noise too) |

check to see if your intake elbow is securely fastened.
Although mine is an aftermarket one, I had the screws come somewhat loose...made a hell of a racket...high pitched sound.... have someone sit in the truck and rev it up a bit in park, while someone else pushes the intake elbow a little bit to see if the sound occurs. |
