6.0 blown headgaskets per Ford?????

'04 6.0 4X4 stock except Bully Dog powerpup @ 90,000 miles.

So one week ago I smelled coolant through the ventilation system, suspected Heater core leak. Checked the forums and determined it could be the Degas bottle puking and or a simple hose leak. Unable to determine the source of the smell and the problem went away. A few days later checked Degas bottle and it was empty. Added a gallon of coolant and scheduled an appoinment with Ford. All the while there was no loss of power or white smoke out of the exhaust. Not even another whiff of coolant through the vents either.

I asked Ford to pressure check the cooling system and the tell me it maxed out at 24psi. Their diagnosis is a blown headgasket.

Does this sound right?

I asked them if they are sure it is not the EGR cooler and they said it wasn't. Okay, so now they want $5,500 to fix it!!!! I haven't authorized work yet, I'd like to get a second opinion first. How can I be sure its not the EGR cooler instead of the blown headgaskets.

Don't you have to overheat the engine to blow the headgaskets? I have never overheated the engine.

What are your thoughts?

Excessive cylinder pressures is what blows head gaskets on a 6.0 not overheating. My guess would be if it is holding 24 psi then it is not likely to be the EGR cooler.

How many miles does the truck currently have on it? If it is 90,000 you should be covered by warranty unless they know about the Bullydog and aren't a mod friendly dealer.

Hopefully one of the techs will see this and help you out.

Unfortunately, I purchased the truck from the dealer 11months ago with the programmer already on it. I was not informed of the problems with the 6.0 at the time of sale or else I would not have bought it.

It seems I have screwed myself.

I would hope that since they sold you the truck they would at least stand behind it. Hope you get it fixed!
