Bad lifter, now what?

I will try to keep this short. A friend of mine has an 06 that developed a "chirp ", had it diagnosed as a bad lifter. He took the truck to a "friends " shop to be repaired. His so called friend pulled the cab, tore the engine down to the shortblock, set the cab back on and pushed the truck outside. He asked the owner for money for parts ($3500), they were gonna do studs, egr delete and a few other upgrades. Well, after handing over the money the truck has sat for over a year, I now have it as a basket case with none of the new parts he was given the money for. I pulled the engine last night and found it did have a bad lifter and the cam is trashed. I started going through the parts and have discovered the injectors are gone, FICM is gone and a couple of other small things.
Now I am trying to decide the best way to go, tear his engine down and put a cam and lifters in it, or order a long block with a headstud upgrade. Injectors and ficm are going to suck just because of core charges, but it has to be done. Just looking for input or ideas, if anybody knows of any parts let me know.

sounds like a real bad deal,IMO,I would be looking for a good used running motor,or a rebuilt shortblock, with a warranty, then send his heads in for mag and mill job.,and do your studs then,I wouldn't get into an engine with a trashed cam, megabux in machine work, and new camshaft, I've seen shortblocks around from $4-5k

Just drained the oil thru a paint strainer, no metal in the strainer, don't even see any metallic in the oil. So nw I wonder if anything is hurt or if I can put a new cam and lifters in it.
