2006 P0299 Code

Popped a code the other day, pulled out my scanner and it said p0299, low turbo pressure/boost. It runs just fine (code came up on the way back from the store). Starts just fine. What are the different things that can cause this code. Cracked hose and dirty turbo were the only things i can think of. Whats the best way to start eliminating the simple possibilities.

Everything is stock and it only has 50k miles. I didnt know if the turbo gets gummed up that quick. With the stock EGR is it going to clog up alot quicker? Even if the turbo is sticking is it fairly safe to drive? Whats the easiest way to check the VGT without taking the turbo out?
