Help determining whats wrong with my coolant tank?
Long story short, I bought the truck with 69k miles on the 16th of this month and this past friday I was looking under the hood and noticed that my degas bottle cap (coolant) had puked and I had white residue around the top of the coolant tank. So I took it to the ford dealer I bought it from and they replaced the degas bottle cap and topped off the coolant fluid. This worked for a few days...
Then today I noticed that my degas bottle cap once again puked the white residue. To add onto that, I notice that the coolant inside the tank is not fully settled and almost looks like it was boiling inside the tank. I was a thread of a guy who had this "boiled" look and his was a headgasket failure. Anyone have any opinions/confirmations of what the problem is? I've attached photos of both problems to help the diagnosis. I am taking into the same ford dealership tomorrow morning to get diagnosised and thankfully I still have the 4 month warranty that came with the truck from the dealer so hopefully what ever it is is covered. I'm just spasing out right now knowing the truck will probably be in the shop all next week. ![]()

99% chance your head gaskets are blown if they just put a new coolant cap on and its puking still. They were probably just trying to rule out the easiest fix to make sure they didn't rip into that engine for no reason. When you take it run it decently hard and when they open the degas bottle it will volcano and they will know right away that its head gaskets and they won't be able to d!ck you around saying its something its not.

When most puke coolant there is more than one white streak down the tank! When mine was puking hard it would blow it everywhere! Had white residue all over everything! That little white line looks like some that may have been dripped out of the lid at some point!
Although if i was under warranty I would get them to pressure test the system to make sure the gaskets werent blown or the EGR wasnt blown, since your under warranty! If you dont agree with them pressure test it yourself! There is instructions on how to do it on here! |

Thanks guys, if it is the headgaskets, hopefully I can talk them into installing ARP headstuds and a EGR delete even if I have to pay out of pocket a little.
Muddy...the first time it puked last friday it had 4 or 5 streaks going down and the look of the coolant tank just worries me so I'll get it checked tomorrow and will let you guys know the outcome. Last edited by Hennigan; 07-26-2012 at 07:40 PM. |

Update
Well today I took the truck and dropped it off at the dealership. It puked out of the degas bottle more on my way over. They will call me at some point today once they run the tests to figure out the problem. On the bright side its under warrenty and look at the sick loaner they gave me! 2009 f250 Harley Davidson 6.4 diesel. Wont mind at all if it takes a few days to fix my truck!

Lol depends what you call bad news. My oil cooler was clogged and the egr cooler was starting to go. Good news for me because I just got a new oil cooler, egr cooler, and headgaskets for $100 because of my warrenty. Hoping the new parts will hold off till winter when I'll do the EGR delete. And with two weeks since I bought it, I had better be treated damn well haha.
On a side note my god is the 6.4 quiet and forgot how much I hated black leather in the summer...Can't wait to get my 6.0 back |
