A/c Compressor or clutch

03 6.0. Noticed over the past couple months Ac in truck would cool then stop working. Its fully charged etc. I looked at the clutch one morning and noticed it would engage then stop and was pretty wobbly but no great amount of noise. Theres what looks the same as brake dust all over the clutch. Other day I drove it to work and went to start it and it spun over for a second then stopped totally. Now when you turn the key it turns a half round maybe then stops completely. Had to have it towed home. Just wondering if it could just be the clutch locked up or the entire compressor. Any thoughts would be great before I go tearing the whole system down.

If you can turn the compressor with a 1/4" ratchet on the shaft nut it is probably just the electromagnetic clutch.

Slightly off-topic but I just had my compressr and a few lines replaced on my mustang. The fam clutch plate popped and cracked my belt tensioner. those componets are pricey. I would definitely get those items fixed before it get worse.

I took the down pipe off so I could get to the compressor. I took a screw driver and just put it across the front of the clutch and it would spin but you could feel the grinding.Guess I'll try the clutch first.
When u take the clutch off is it ok to try and spin the engine over without crap going everywhere? never messed with a diesel compressor before.
