Temp gauge

Brand new to the 6.0 diesel world. I have a 06 Harley f350. Usually after first start the temp gauge comes up a bit then falls. Then after a min it will read fine. Yesterday and today it bounced up and down sporatically when it does the engine fan comes on and ac shuts down. When gauge reads fine the fan shuts off and ac works fine. I got out and checked connection on the sender and it didn't do it again on way home. Is this just a bad sending unit. And if it doesn't read a temp it goes to some sort of protect mode and shuts off ac and makes engine fan run? When gauge falls it falls like the truck is off no partial readings. Thanks

To tell for shure you need to read the actual temps with a scanner or a monitor and see if it flucuates with the dash gauge. Altho Fords dash gauges are not very good.
