blue smoke problem
i have an 05 350 with 134000 miles on it. i recently just had the egr cooler and oil cooler replaced along with radiator flush and what not. After the work was done i noticed the truck was blowing blue smoke when accelerating from a stop. I talked to the mechanic and he said it should clear up after putting a few miles on it. It finally cleared up after several weeks. Now about 2 months later it started smoking again but even worse than before. Nearly everytime i go to accelerate from a stop it pours out blue smoke. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

I assume the original EGR Cooler failed and was replaced? If so it is normal for it to smoke for a while, the amount depends on how much coolant was in the exhaust. If it cleared up and is now back, unfortunately chances are something else is the problem of the original problem is back.
I would have recommended and EGR Delete versus replacing the cooler. The Stock EGR Coolers are problematic and replacing them with the same defective product is not recommended. If not a delete and a Bullet Proof EGR Cooler upgrade at minimum. Keep us posted on what it turns out to be? Dave |

I was wanting to go ahead and get the EGR delete done instead of just replacing it. But, i had just moved 1200 miles across country and didnt know of any reputable diesel mechanics in the area that i now live so i went with getting the work done at a local ford dealer (they wouldnt do an EGR delete). If the EGR cooler was bad again wouldn't it be smoking white and not blue? When i first talked to the mechanic about it smoking he said the smoke was just from carbon knocked loose in the intake from when the work was being done. How long does it usually take to clear that out? Would it be worth pulling the EGR valve out and cleaning it up?

Definitely worth pulling the valve to Inspect/clean it, look for sign of Coolant (mushy soot)
Is it worse in the morning on a cold engine? Original injectors? Dave |

I'm not sure if the injectors have ever been replaced or not. I purchased the truck used. It seems like it smokes a little more when its colder but still smokes quite a bit when up to temp. I usually let it warm up for 2 or 3 minutes before driving.

How does it idle when you first start is smooth or does it misfire a little... or a lot?
6.0L Injectors suffer from "stiction" when the spool valve starts to hang up in the chamber it will misfire more cold and smoke blue. The spool valve is controlled by oil, so when the engine is cold and the oil is thicker the stiction will be magnified indicating failing injectors. If it gets better when warm you can almost be certain its injector time. Plug it in, does it idles better than norm when you start it? Dave |
