ok so my boss went an bought an 05 f550 dump truck. had to have it delivered because it didnt start (first mistake dont buy a truck with out starting it). i got it running but it blows white smoke for the first five minutes and then switches after warm to a dark grey to black smoke, very thick. when i goose the throttle the the turbo doesnt seem to want to spool. i pulled the intake apart to check the turbo to make sure it spins freely and it does. no codes are being thrown. the truck has a fresh oil change on it. any one have any ideas on where to go from here. im worrying that it is the egr or the head gasket and the computer is trying to compensate the loss of power by adding more fuel which causes the black smoke.

Howdy, and welcome to the ORG.

White smoke is the giveaway that the EGR cooler has most likely failed. I would not continue running the truck, to prevent you from hydrolocking it.

I would get it towed to a shop, and have them pressure test the coolant system, check ECT/EOT delta, check FICM voltage at cranking, and check the injectors and turbo for signs of sticking (easier on a diagnostic computer).

Pull the EGR valve and clean it. Sounds like its clogged

because its not my truck i as well am loling like crazy, i offered to go with him to the auction and help him pick out a good dump truck....i will laugh all the way to the bank with the money he will be paying me to fix this ****. ill keep this post updated as i check more of the things, havent run the truck since we got it and i pulled the bat cables so stupid people cant start it

ok so i pulled the egr valve and cleaned it.....ran the truck for only a minute to see if the smoke cleared up......no luck, sounding more and more like the egr has failed......... well guess im going to be breaking the bad news to the boss man in the morning.....
