HELP!! egts running hot, smoke coming from turbo
Ok, so I recently installed my egr delete, a new serpentine belt with a couple pulleys, blue spring, a new powermax turbo. I have an Afe stage 2 intake. I an on the final phase of my coolant flush. Restore plus in it now. I started it up and ran it around the neighborhood got the engine up to normal temps with the heat turned up inside the cab(thermostat still in). I started noticing a smell like something was burning. I parked the truck, shut it off and saw clear smoke seeping out from under the turbo. It had a certain smell to it. Could not pin point what or where it was coming from. My egts were running a little hot (200° higher than normal) whick sparked that something was wrong. I am running Sct tuner with just the standard performance tune. No custom tune yet. I also noticed as I drove it a scraping sound coming from the engine. Or the tranny?? Any thoughts??

Do you have good boost? Stuck Veins or bad Vgt solinoid will cause excessive EGTs. Smoke could simply be the exhaust side of the turbo getting hot and cooking off the production oils,
Your new turbo may seem to work correctly and build boost under throttle but I've had issue with turbos and the ECU not learning the VGT correctly and causing it to act weird, Just an idea... |

Good pts. I am just about done the flush. I should have the coolant in the engine soon. Boost has been pretty much ok for the most part. Nothing unusual. This turbo seems to run similar to the stock one. Bad vgt solenoid huh. How can u check that? Unplug the the vgt wire to the turbo? The one in my stock turbo was fine. This concerns me. I have also heard the pcm has hard time learning the vgt system like u stated. How can this be corrected?

Quick test, if you have a strait pipe exhaust simply un plug the Vgt solinoid with the truck running and listen, you will clearly hear the jet engine sound disappear and turn into a deep rumble, doesn't exactly proove anything but if it doesn't change it's a start to a proper diag,
If I remember correctly if you disconnect the batts for 30 min it will reset the general parameters of the ECU, and will re-learn the Vgt solinoid, I would probly turn it back to stock before doin this just to be safe, wouldnt hurt to take it around the block with a stock ECU and see what your EGTs do then.. Whatever your issue, if any, it seems minor.. |
