weird noise when starting

A month ago my truck (03 6.0) would start most of the time and about once a week it would take a few tries of turning it over and then it would finally start. Usually I would plug it in and then it would start fine. I replaced the FICM, I had a spare 7 pin. The truck started good after that. Yesterday I went out after work to go home and the truck would not start at all. It would turn over but not kick in. I plugged it in and tried it about every 7-10 minutes for about 1/2 an hour. Each time I tried it the truck would get progressively closer to starting. Finally it started and it ran normal thereafter. This morning when I went to start it, it started right away but the engine noise it made while it was turning over was a lot more higher pitched than normal. Usually the noise is deep and powerful this noise is high pitched and sounds really whimpy. Once the truck starts it runs and idles great. If anyone has any suggestions what this might be please let me know. Maybe a starter, or maybe a new rebuilt FICM. Thank you for you help.

The 6.0 starter is very suceptibal to heat, if you turn it over for too long and too many times it can damage/weaken the starter. Best bet is to have that starter checked out at a starter/alternator rebuild shop. They have lot better equipment than the parts houses do and a lot more knowledgeable personel.

If it is slower cranking than normal, just replace the starter. They're cheap enough, and given the temperatures coming, it's best to make sure it's as stout as possible.
