My 6.0 (2006) abruptly began leaking motor oil. Hard to see exactly were it is coming from. Drips down and around the bellhousing from above. The lifter valley is dirty/oily but not wet enough so to explain what is happening at the back of the motor. I can see an aluminum plate on the back of the block above the bellhousing. Could be that?
Can anybody offer any insight as to what it may be and how to service it. Any good engine schematics I can look at to see what I am getting into?
The IPR (injector pressure regulator) and a high pressure oil fitting that are attached to the high pressure oil pump is right above the bellhousing. I would bet it is something to do with that. The plate that covers the HPOP also has an o-ring on it that can leak. There is a heat sheild that is attached with two 8mm bolts right above the bellhousing that you can remove and might be able to see the IPR and fitting I mentioned. The only other way to see back there is to remove the turbo.
any recent high pressure pump repairs? seen unrepaired cracked rear covers (from stc failure) cause an oil leak. I would try to get a telescoping mirror back there to locate your oil leak
I have seen my share of this as well. I will put my money on that the above is more than likely the OP's issue. Unfortunately, if the rear cover has cracked, it WILL require transmission removal as well as HPOP removal to correct and repair.
I just recently had one on my doorstep, that the owner specifically requested the install of the updated replacement for the STC fitting. Unbeknowest to him, it had already failed to the point that it had cracked his rear engine cover, which I had discovered upon HPOP removal. Funny thing was, he never complained about a hard/no-start issue.
It is most likely an STC fitting (snap to connect). You will need to pull the turbo and HPOP. There is a bunch of other things you should upgrade too since you'll be in there. Ill see if I can dig up the diagram I used. It'll be tonight.
The STC fitting is under the HPOP cover and a leak would not be visible from the exterior of the engine (unless the above scenario happens from sinner6.0L's post).
The truck is a 2006 6.0L Crew Cab F250 4x4 KR AT. I tow a 10k enclosed race trailer at times but 90% of its miles are un-laden. I run stock software when towing and SCT go fast software when daily driving because it gives me better mileage (when I keep my foot out of it). Truck is otherwise stock. Except for a new FICM the truck has required nothing but scheduled maintenance over its 130k miles life.

I also hear that there is some kind of electrical sensor back there that can leak?
K you need to look closely at the rear cover of the engine(aluminum). If there is a crack at the right top of the cover, you have had STC fitting failure. When and if the fittings fail they can break the rear cover causing an oil leak.
Yep I just saw one the other day came in with an oil leak, rear cover broken and ran fine with no codes. Kinda crazy, but seen it. Ive also seen STC fittings blown apart and no cracked rear cover. So with these things anythings possiblehnoes:
Guess I was too pessimistic. Powerwashed everything and took it for an easy drive. Didn't notice anything. In the morning I drove it with the oil cold and oil was coming out the back side of the oil filter cap. Found the profile of the o-ring was not round but very flat on the ID and OD sides. Service guy must not have been replacing it as he should since it was less than 3 months since the last oil/filter change. Sometimes you just get lucky.
