Hi, I'm new here to the forums as well as completely new to owning a diesel truck. Just bought my first power stroke last Friday. Got a beautiful 2006 f-250 crew cab long bed king ranch edition. I bought it from a small dealer and he changed the oil while I was there before I left with the new truck.
I went back there today to pick up an extra set of keys he had found and he told me they put 5W-20 in, and they should have put in 15W-40. I know this is what the owners manual suggests as well. He said it wasn't a big deal but to use that next change. That doesn't sound right to me. Should I change the oil immediately to 15W-40 or wait until my next change? I just don't know because this is all new to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have only driven maybe 40 miles so far on it with that oil.
Thanks for the info. You think I'm okay leaving the filter in though? Any tricks to changing oil on a diesel engine vs a gas engine or is it the same process? Also, where is the drain plug located? Just to verify, it's 15 quarts, and I had a few buddies recommend the Rotella 15W-40, good motor oil? Sorry for all the questions, but I really am as green as they come with this engine
I am new to the 6.0 but I have owned a Chevy 6.5 Turbo for 13 years, my company has drove Ford PS diesels for many years so don't be too intimidated by the new setup just start the learning curve.
The filter should be ok. No tricks that I know of. The plug is in the bottom of the pan, just like most. Yes, Its 15 quarts. Rotella is a good oil. Good luck and you will pick up things as they come up.
Correct Raider, 15qts WITH the filter. You could always drain the oil and pop the filter cap so all that oil drains and the filter doesn't hold any oil in the filter housing. Then it would be 15qts.
I agree with cartmanea. The dealer needs to accept responsibility and write a statement of their goof-up for future problems you could have.
You really don't want your next thread to be "Used 5w-20, now the engine is making this horrible noise"
Good Luck!!!
