Would unsealed air filter housing cause problems

Just wondering if on the air filter if the housing on it was not sealed properly would it cause truck to run rough. Meaning like it was missing or not getting fuel especially when you have it going up a hill or a steady 70 or 5

It could if any dirt was able to get into the turbo. It's what we call dusting and can quickly ruin a turbo.
