2003 6.0L Starter issues?

On this truck that I just bought, the starter seems to act weird. I can turn the motor over for 1/4-1/2 second, then it stops turning the motor and sounds like the starter is free spinning. If I let off the key and let the starter motor come to a stop, I can then turn the key and for another 1/4-1/2 second it'll turn the motor then will repeat the free spinning. Every 5, 10, 50 tries (ie: randomly) it'll turn the motor over for 5-10 seconds before free spinning again.

I'm guessing this isn't normal for a Powerstroke? Would this be a worn starter, or something else causing it to act like this?

anyone else have this issue? Is it a worn starter, or something else?

yes sounds like a starter. replace it with a factory ford starter. DO NOT put an aftermarket unit on it as more than likely you would be changing it again next year.

cool, thanks for the heads up. Wasn't sure if I should have it rebuilt by a local alt / starter rebuild shop, or just bite the bullet and buy a replacement fomoco.

I guess since I'm going to be dropping in a ctd at some point in the very near future, might just save a few bucks and have this one rebuilt locally.

Thanks. Going to go with either a 12v VE or P pump motor. I'm tired of electronics, sensors, PCM's etc. Would like the power of a VP44 motor, but don't want to screw with everything else at the moment. Hopefully the new software I bought will help me get the 6.0 back on the road so I can get a few more months of driving out of it.
