white smoke at idle (smells like diesel)

Hi,

I had an earlier post, but it was in the general section, so I decided it would be best to re-post it here with my latest findings.

So, my 2006 f350 is smoking white smoke when idling, no too bad, but as I pull away it leaves a great big white cloud of smoke. It then clears up as I drive for a 1 second or two. There is no issue with the engine running, is sounds fine and pulls fine, also has a steady idle.

I am not losing coolant or oil. The white smoke smells like diesel and it burns my eyes.

I am now thinking that I have a leaking injector (or more than one).
Maybe it's leaking a slight amount of fuel, which at a decent RPM is no big deal compared to the fuel the injector is supposed to be delivering, but at idle, it is just letting too much unburned fuel get in to the exhaust system. Then when I pull away , it blows it all out in a great big white cloud.

It's not throwing any DTC's. I checked the EGR, it was a bit clogged, but I cleaned it up without any improvement.

Any ideas how I may be able to further diagnose this, w/o just buying 8 new injectors :-O ..... $$$$, wow!

TIA,
Ian

Went through the same thing. I was having the white smoke at start up until engine was warm. IN MY CASE, it was the #7 cylinder glow plug. I for sure thought I was having an injector issue. I was searching around looking for a good deal. Needless to say, a couple days later a my CEL came on. Thank god it was just a &20 fix. Just something to look into.

ah, forgot to mention, it is ok when the engine is cold (no smoke). It only happens when the engine is warm.
