Please help a 6.4 guy with a 6.0!

I have been helping my neighbour diagnose his 6.0. It seems to hessitate and smoke really bad when it is cold. The smoke is kinda gray, blue. Not relly black and not really white. I also noticed that it looks like his coolant tank has been puking since it was low and there is a slight white crystal residue on the top of the overflow around the cap. We topped it up and changed the fuel filters.

I read on here that the ficm are common as are the egr coolers, which direction should I head?

Thanks

either jack up the rear or park it on an incline with the nose down and see if there is any coolant. if there is the egr cooler is toast. if its puking out the degas bottle chances are good that it is blown.
