Turbo Rebuild/Unison ring questions

I Had my turbo out for a EGR delete last weekend and noticed a few things. The first is that the compressor side seems to have a lot of up/down play but not in/out play. How much up/down is too much?

Second I noticed the Unison ring has a bad wear spot in it in the cam slot. I assume the previous owner let it idle a lot and it wore in that position. I would like to know where i can get one? Everywhere I've looked they want to sell me an entire turbo when i just need the ring. I'm also wondering if the vanes should be replaced with the ring?

Thanks

I'm not sure about where to get another unison ring but the turbo shouldn't have enough up and down play to where the impeller contacts the housing.

While I have built a lot of turbo's I useually buy a rebuilt one for the warrenty, 30 days useually. You rebuild it yourself and it fails there is no warrenty.

a rebuilt one is great but i'll be paying around $1000 more for the turbo than i will for the parts. thats a really expensive 30 day warranty

We must be getting a real good price on our rebuilt turbo's then. We useually save about $150 over buying just the parts.

to get a rebuilt turbo here (Canada) i'm looking at about $1200-$1500. the parts to do the bushings and seals are about $150 and i'm trying to get a price on the ring which shouldn't be any more than the bushings so thats why i'm trying to get the parts myself.

Go to your nearest local Ford dealer and ask for part number 3C3Z-6C885-A (unison ring). You will be in for sticker shock.

Ford Diesel/Senior/Master Tech who placed 2nd overall in Ontario on the Fix-It-Right-First-Visit score for 2010

....who works at a dealership that now employs SOME half decent looking female employees since they overhauled most of the administrative staff

....but STILL loves hot women with big boobies

....and STILL hates working on E-Series with 6.0L
