water temp sensor (moved to 7.3)

Where is the sending unit that gives the water temp info to the OBD port?
My is saying 40 degrees on the reader but the guage seems in the normal range. This is on a 2000 7.3 six speed.

normal scanners will NOT read a diesel. last time i used one, it said my current engine temp was -40*(was fully warmed up to 195*).

the sender is right on top of the water pump btw
