Powerstroke let down
I had to go rescue my neighbor yesterday. He has a 2005 6.0L, and it has had no problems until the last 2 days. He was planning a camping trip with his 31 foot trailer for the weekend. He came home 2 days ago and I noticed he had his hood up, so I went to see what was going on. There was coolant everywhere! He said he smelled coolant coming home, and the engine temp shot up all of the sudden. He pulled over, truck cooled down, and he drove home. I told him EGR was first thing that came to mind, and I would be careful if trying to go anywhere. He topped off the coolant and left yesterday towing the trailer. He got about 80 miles and called me to come tow his trailer back home. Truck left on a wrecker. Truck was overheating, engine was stalling out, and white smoke was pouring out exhaust when going on to the wrecker.
What is the verdict? Ad libs version:

Is he out of warranty?

He is not by mileage, so he has to find out when the purchase date was.

Oh ok. Every truck seems to be different. When the HG's went in my brothers 04, his temp gauge shot up and his fan kicked on. No smoke of any kind. Made it back to his house and the coolant was boiling in the reservoir. He was able to limp it to the dealer for the repair. His egr cooler did not go out in this case though. I think if your neighbor had coolant blowing out the cap his cooler went. It usually flash boils the coolant and forces it to purge out the tank. If he's not under warranty, have him do a delete kit on that cooler.
