intermittent loss of power

Over the past 7 months I have had a issue that has come up 5 times. The truck (05 F350 SD Crew Cab 6.0 Powerstroke) loses all power when I let up on the throttle. The motor is still running but the turbo gauge is flat lined and when I push on the accelerator the rpm's come up very slowly and there is a lot of white/gray smoke from the exhaust. I put the truck in neutral and gradually get the rpm's to come up and then the turbo gauge comes back up and the white smoke stops. Sometimes this only takes 30 seconds to run through this process and once it took 3 or 4 minutes. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Afraid this is going to leave me stranded at some point.

sounds like maybe an egr valve sticking on you or a turbo sticking. any codes? pull the egr valve and inspect it, see if it is full of carbon and soot.
