can head gaskets randomly go bad?

my truck has a little bit of white smoke coming out every once and a while, when its idleing and when you first accelerate and i was just curious to know if head gaskets can just randomly go bad? the truck has never overheated or even came close either. ive had it for about a year. thanks

Cool

I don't think that they should but guess can happen, usally on our 6.0 they blow from 2 much boost < high tunes >. or the oil cooler gets stoped up with coolant flow
< Flush coolant every 30,000 to help prevent that > and the coolant can't get to the egr in proper amounts and it gets hot and cracks and then coolant gets into our heads and hydrolock the motor, coolant in the oil ect.

ok. ya i changed the coolant about 6 months ago with the motocraft gold coolant so that should be good. as far as boost, it is never really high. i have the sct and run the performance tune every day and it never goes over 20 lbs of boost, ever. the egr cooler has a plug welded into it so theres no exhaust going threw it but the coolant still goes threw it.

White smoke is either a bad injector(s) or a failed egr cooler.

id think w/ an injector you'd have drivability issues of some sort.

when my egr went bad, it smoked a crap load on cold starts. other than that you couldn't tell.

when my headgaskets blew, basically just puking out the degas bottle was the only sign.

ok. nothin coming out of the degas bottle. it mostly does it when you first start it and if you just give it gas or take off. it doesnt do it all the time.

Park on a incline with the bed of the truck higher than the engine. Then pull your egr valve. If it is wet the it has failed.
