tecs opinions please
I would really like the Technicians to chime in and give us there opinions as to what’s the root cause, of the majority of problems with these later 6.0’s. As I read the forums it seems as if the majority of the failures are pretty much in some way related, I.E. EGR cooler, Oil Cooler, Head gaskets.
Let’s say you have a stock truck, with an aftermarket Air Breather and a programmer. And the individual only uses the tow tunes. Would it be accurate to say that programmers play the major role in premature engine failure? Or would it be more accurate to say that the EGR coolers and Oil Coolers were of poor design which ultimately caused the head gaskets to blow. It seems to me that these turbo's creating upwards of 25lbs of boost, coupled with the poor design of the EGR cooler, Oil Cooler and using stretch bolts on the heads is the real culprit, then add a programmer and BOOM! So would we see the same amount of failures if we were not using programmers? |

Sorry not tech but how bout a bump.
I'm sure several will tell you that with a programer most problems are right foot induced. But yes the oil, egr cooler and head bolts are a weak link even with a stock truck. The coolers will usually kill each other if one goes bad. |

The vast majority of the trucks that I work on that failed did not have a programmer. The EGR and Oil cooler were an "ok" design in my opinion, but a programmer definately doesn't help the longevity of any of the stock systems.

Just do ARP studs, EGR delete, and a cooling system filtration system. Oh yea, and upgrade the STC fitting and update your FICM programming and you are good to go.

i added a coolant filter, will that void the warranty?
