Can anyone tell me why I am only getting 2 months of run time before this o-ring breaks apart and I lose fuel pressure? I am using the OEM blue spring kit 3C3Z-9T517-AG
What kind of fuel pressure are you seeing? You'd think that o-ring would only be under pressure if the spring tension was so high that the brass cup couldn't slide out and relieve it. :dunno:
I was seeing 70psi, and then it dropped to 40psi. The o-ring should always be under pressure. If the spring doesn't move, the o-ring could see 100psi from the pump. The plunger (brass portion the o-ring mounts to) slides in and out very easily. So there is no hanging.
As for fuel additive, I have been using ZDDPPlus ZDDP Engine Oil Additive Zinc & Phosphorus, 4oz each oil change for the last 5yrs.
Normal pressure yeah, but I was thinking about pressure high enough to damage the o-ring. The cup would have to be jammed in such a way that it couldn't move but since you say it moves freely then.....
Does yours really have an o-ring? Mine uses a flat rubber washer in that location. It seems a lot stiffer than an o-ring. Maybe a difference between model years? Mine's an 04.
When I take it out, I'll get some pics. The last o-ring just fell apart. Almost as if the fuel ate it. But it's from an OEM kit. So this is the second one.
I have another kit coming tomorrow, so that's when I will swap out all the parts.
A ban would help me be more productive at work today, but i really don't want to have to fill out all of the paperwork...
On topic: @Azzkikin I was hoping to see those pics you mentioned you'd get before actually trying to contribute to the thread. Other than that I'd guess a nick in the housing or something might be eating the seal up. Do you fill up at stores with biodiesel or a high ratio mix fuel?
Ya, I know, without pics it's hard to give more input, but hopefully someone else has had the problem and found an answer.
The places I fill up at don't sell any forms of a modified diesel. And only fill up at 2 locations and have been for years. They are both owned by different companies so it's not the same fuel supply.
What year is this truck? Nvm just saw 06. When you installed this kit did you change the cover? Your bowl doesn't have the black plastic piece present does it?
You see the blue paint of the spring isn't even worn off yet. The engine has stayed below 212deg both oil and water. And both have never been more that 7degs away from each other. Where do you think the heat would be coming from?
This one's a head scratcher. So this thing was runnng on the original spring until a few months ago? And it's blown twice in that time or is it three times? Any possibility there's a burr on the housing surface that the washer contacts? Still have the original parts? What does that washer look like?
Is the kit coming from a reputable source? I only ask because the blue paint is really thick and is flaking off. It's been a while since I did mine but I could swear it had more of a blue dye on it that just dissolved away. Like I said, it's been 6 years so don't quote me on that, just throwing things out there.
Yea it is a weird one. Honestly, myself I'd probably just go ahead and swap in another filter tower. See what happens with that.
Was there anything done just prior to all this?
I don't know when I originally replaced the stock spring with the blue spring, but it was a whole kit replacement. But I replaced that blue spring and o-ring (flat) in January. Then replaced the spring and o-ring (flat) again last month. And one more time yesterday with the flat style. I am thinking of just going back to the original spring or finding an o-ring (round).
Does anyone have the part number to the 0-ring itself? I doubt it's sold separately.
I'd like to think it's a reputable source, but then again it could just be my luck. I am going to go to Ford and see if I can get just the kit without the housing, I am sure it'll be $4,999 lol. But that might give me more reliability and who knows, might show that the kits I am buying are complete sheet.
FWIW that oring has to be flat. I've seen people install a round one and they break.
