F250 powerstroke smoking badly

my 06 F250 is throwing loads of smoke from the exhaust pipe. on startup it hardly smokes at all but gets worse as the engine warms up. It is also using a little coolant. The motor runs fine and sounds ok too. Im hoping that its something easy to fix but fear the worst. Does anyone have any advice on what or how to check? Thanks.
