Check engine light

My truck is at the dealer for a check engine light. They called me this morning telling me both of my batteries failed...that would not trigger a check engine light to come on would it? The truck would crank but it would take a while to start. Are they pullin my chain? They also told me they would have to replace the batteries to continue diagnostic. I worked at a shop previous to my new job and I know its not hard to pull codes from the computer. Why wouldn't they just do that before replacing batteries?

Tell me about it...I just told them to replace the batteries anyways since they need replacing. They only charged me 275 for both installed. I think that is a fair price but it seems like they are trying to get me for every penny.

If they were not able to maintain a minimum of 10 volts they would not have been able to read anycodes and would loose communication between PCM and FICM. Yes a code and the lite would come on.

I keep going back to dealer because I don't know of any diesel mechanics in San Jose. I would think since they were able to test my batteries they would be able to keep some kind of charge on the batteries till they are complete with the diagnostic. Isn't that House of Diesel place located in Santa Cruz? Do they do mechanic work or just custom stuff?
