rear main seal

how common is it for a rear main seal to go bad on a 6.0

i have a 05 excursion with 99k last week i brought it in for a small oil leak. they replaced the rubber boots that allows air to come out of the turbo and said this was the problem since both the upper and lower were cracked. now a week later the thing is still leaking oil.

dropped it off at the shop today said the rear main seal may be the problem but they will get back to me tomorrow with more info.

I agree with that statement. If I were to guess, I would have to say the bedplate seal (a job ten times harder than a rear main seal), CMP or CKP o-rings deteriorating and migrating rearward. Those are just guesses.

I think ive only replaced one rear main seal on a 6.0l. I agree with m-chan it could be any of those things.

The seal that seals the upper and lower half of the engine. This repair mandates engine removal.

My dad had the rear main replaced on his '03 6.0L, didn't leak for a while, now its been leaking again. Thought it was the rear main again, but maybe its something else... He has an extended warranty until April. Engine has been flawless except for the minor leak, I would almost advise him to leave it alone and not let them tear it all apart chasing the minor leak.

Are you sure it's not the ICP sensor that's leaking oil, given that it's an '03 model year? Has it ever been replaced before? When these start to leak oil, they can often mimick the appearance of a rear main seal leak.

ICP hasn't been replaced, I've thought that could be it. I'll do some more investigating before we take it in.
