Hoping to get some advice on my 2005 6.0L from you more experienced folks since I am a beginner. Here are my two most current problems:
1. June's breakdown was a bad alternator. NAPA sold me a replacement OEM alternator that is 135 amps. That was the biggest size they had. My truck is a single alternator system and my question is whether that is big enough/enough amps for my truck. It got me back running but I don't want problems down the road. Other than occasionally pulling a camping trailer, there are no auxiliary power systems, stereos, off road lights, etc.
2. July's breakdown left me on the side of the road when the rubber elbow connector between the intercooler tube and the turbo charger blew off the front of the turbo charger. I reattached it twice and it would not stay on. I replaced the connector with a new one from NAPA but I need to know the correct torque to tighten it down so the new one doesn't come off. I'm asking because the new one blew off after I put it on so I really tightened it down with a 7/16 box wrench I had but I need to make sure it is right before I do any serious driving.
Thanks. I found a you tube video from DieselTech Ron which calls for 9 ft. pounds so I'll have to check it. I really wrenched it on there to keep if from popping off again so I could make it home...
As the esteemed Master Chase stated, torque spec is 9 ft. lbs. I used an extension so adjusted my wrench to 10.5. I've had no issues with my Riff Raff boots coming off. What brand did Napa sell you? Some guys also rough up the hose and connection, then hit with a little hair spray before installing to keep them from blowing off.
Napa sold me their Napa brand part (26222). Tomorrow when it is cool, I will remove it and re-seat it with the correct torque. I'll try the hair spray trick too!
When it first blew, it separated from the turbo charger itself. I tried to reattach it but it wouldn't stay on. I replaced it with a new part and it separated between the aluminum tube and the rubber hose. Then I crawled into the engine and really wrenched it down so I could make it up a mountain and home. Tomorrow, I'll have another go at it to make sure it is installed properly.

because IMO the clamps can deform ( you can see a hump in the band ) and the CAC boot expands ( undetectable)
I had a brand new set of Ford boots and i ruined the CAC to Turbo on mine because i didn't use an inch pound tq wrench and 9ft lbs was a lot more than i was guessing by feel
( I wouldn't exceed that spec unless aftermarket specified )
I don't think I would turn to NAPA for the CAC parts heck I wouldn't use their alternators either
I would suggest a decent brand boot and clamp because repairing a blown boot on the side of a mountain pass with almost no pull off while your 4000 lbs truck camper sucks
but when it blows off again 1/2 mile later you know your in for a crap day
I can pretty much guarantee that every clamp I touch that leaves here is tighter then 12ft/lbs. How tight I have never checked.....I know we are supposed to check torque on everything that we touch as technicians....that's BS. Most do it by feel especially on the smaller fasteners that aren't vital engine components. I use a 3/8 Milwaukee electric impact and do it by sound.....Its sounds like a SUPER proper way to tighten these, but I don't have boot issues when they leave so I stick with it. When I first started I would tighten these to 10ft/lbs and 50% of the time I would blow a boot on the test drives when on a WOT run. I stick with what works. Once the boots blow off they are JUNK!! There is a lip indise the boots that gets compromised when the blow off happens and it will never "grab" again even with the hairspray trick....a trick I HATE BTW!! If you tighten them down properly and with a clean boot and pipe you don't need the hairspray, and it makes it easy to service if you have to pull them off.

that plastic POS doesn't even have what I would call "boots" and thats " Clearly" (lol) not ft lbs it's 12NM = 8.8 ft lbs
After blowing off my boots every time I would use the torque wrench, I just started using my calibrated "goodntight". It's virtually solved all my boot problems! :hehe:
I use the slightly more then goodntight, don't wanna hear it pop a boot at 40psi
