Oil in coolant...

04 powerstroke 6.0L. recently noticed that oil was in the coolant, what are all the possible problems that can cause this? how common is this? after a weekend i drained the coolant and put 400 miles on the truck. dosent overheat but coolant is just black with oil. truck has 89k miles on it. thanks for your support, Dustin

im going to say some of the more common problems with the 6.0s are head gaskets and EGR coolers. . . any other symptoms? any modifications? that will help people as well. . . someone will chime in that knows more about the 6.0 then me.

no modifications, bone stock. i never rev it until warm

truck has not seemed to lose any power and runs good. has good oil pressure

Oil cooler

That will be the oil cooler. While the EGR cooler leaking is a common problem it will not get oil in the water, just the exhaust system. Oil cooler leaks are also fairly common, I figure someday they will make a recall on em.
We have about 250 F-series superduty's with the 6.0 in our fleet and about half have had oil cooler problems, as well as EGR cooler problems.

Pretty much the same removal procedure for both problems. Remove the air intake and assorted hoses to get to them they are under the intake.
Drain enuff coolant to get below the heads for starters. The oil cooler is the square one at the front of the block.

After about 10 of them it gets pretty easy. Be carefull tightening the intake bolts they are easily broken.

how much is it to replace if i do it myself? what is a good site to buy one from, thanks

What is the in-service date on the truck? You might still be in the 5yr/100000 mile engine warranty.

called the dealer that my buddy bought it from they said that there was no existing warranty on that truck.

in S.E. Texas these will be dealer items only. Your looking at several hundred dollars and about 8 to 10 hours work if you are a first timer. Prices may vary by location, and whether you will be flushing the system, the cooling and oil systems, recomended if this has been going on awhile. Radiator hoses and oil do not get along well if they are saturated awhile. Inner core has been known to seperate.

Also you can get the cooler assembly, or just the exchanger(that part that goes bad) you have to disassemble the cooler to replace the exchanger, but it's cheaper then buying the whole cooler.
