Having problems with a Ford 6.0 powerstroke. The truck would not start. We hooked up a gauge and checked fuel pressure. Had 40 psi of pressure. Hooked up IDS. We have almost 1000 psi of high oil pressure, 350 rpm and we have sync. We hooked up a hose to the lift pump and got it to start. We remove the fuel tank and found that the screen for the pick up tube had come apart. Removed all the pieces and cleaned out the tank. Installed and added fuel and it started and run. Now if we let it sit for a few days it will not start or if it does start it runs rough and then clears up. We replaced both batteries, since everytime it would not start and we put a battery charger on the batteries, it would start. Not sure what is going on.
Well fuel pressure is too low you want it around 60PSI, do you have the blue spring mod and are you sure the fuel lines aren't leaking? What's the FICM voltage if it drops below 46V it's bad and if the FICM is bad make sure the alternator is good.
That is what we were going to check next is the FICM voltage. Will that cause it NOT to start when it sits overnight? That is the problem we are having. If we get it started and it runs, no problem. Once we let sit over night it will be hard to start. Thanks for your help so far.
The FICM takes the battery voltage and converts it to 48V the lower the battery voltage the harder it is on the FICM. Usually when the engine is cranking the battery voltage is the lowest and dying FICMs show themselves there, here's and example before cranking glow plugs off batteries are at 12.5V, cranking drops them to 9V and the FICM may only be able to produce 36V instead of 48V. Now for it not to start overnight and be related to the FICM means you have a power problem bad FICM, weak batteries, parasitic draw, bad alternator, pinched wire, etc.
We though it was the batteries. When it would not start we would put the battery chargers on and it would start, but run a little rough before it would clear up. We put new batteries and it started right up. We ran it for about 20 miles and it ran good. Let it sit over night and it would not start. I need to get it back to the shop to check voltage. Again thanks for your help.
