I dont know if this will help or not but my truck was doing a similar thing with the turbo, although i dont remember hearing a popping. What I did was Pulled my EGR valve and welded it shut. then I left it unpluged. No more turbo surge. You should be able to go out to your truck when its cooled off, turn on the key so the EGR valve will close, then unplug it. With it being an 04 i dont think you will get a CEL. It may not fix your problem but maybe its worth a try.

Hey Code3 are you still stuck up here in north east PA? If so where about? I live in north east PA. How far from Scranton are you? I can come give it a look see if you want. I have all the tools etc. needed to fix whatever is wrong and there are tons of parts stores around me and I know the boys well at the closest dealer(friends). If we can't figure it out I know some of the best diesel techs around(ford certified). Give me a call 570-575-7686.

By the way it sounds like the turbo solenoid is in fact malfunctioning. I can probably hook you up with a used one way cheaper than new. The guy I bought my truck off of, his son deals in used ford truck parts and is only an hours drive from NEPA.

Hey speeddemon31176 I sent a text to the number you gave...not sure if it's a cell or not. Yes I'm still here and not far from Scranton. I'm south of Montrose about 12mi or so. Right next to a little spot in the road called Springville. They have a post office and gas station... that's about it...lol. I would certainly appreciate some help. It's running but the popping noise is still there. Hope to hear from ya soon... Oh, my # is 417-342-2032. My signal sucks here but I can text. I have to go outside in a certain spot to get a signal worth a dang...
