Steering gear took a crap

While running some errands around town I heard a pop. I got out and looked but couldn't see anything. Came back out after shopping for 10-15 min and there was power steering fluid everywhere and the steering wheel was almost rock solid. Fast forward to today and I finally was able to work on it. Upon examination, I found a leak coming from the housing itself. Look closer and see that a bolt had sheared clean off from the input housing. So I pulled the unit to check it out further and decided to go ahead and replace it. When I went to pull the pitman arm, it was almost touching the housing and I couldn't get the puller around it.

Now on the new unit, after torquing the nut to the proper specs, it has a gap, which to me should be normal. I was just wondering if anyone has seen this on these units. If it is normal, or what could have caused so much to go wrong.
