son of a transfercase

Well I have used this forum a lot but now have a question i have a 2005 f350 dually 6.0 powerstroke 4x4 no lift eletric shift 180k miles so I was in 4wd the other day and no more then a few min I pulled out in the road put it back in 2wd unlocked the hubs backed up about 10 feet then drove down the road about a mile later the road got to eat my transfer case as it blew into pieces going down the road i meen literal pieces so here is where I'm at I'm getting ready to purchase a new transfer case the old ones internals are hanging under the truck and the case is destroyed but I have one question? What caused it? I don't want to spend the 1200 $ on a new case and have that one explode as well. There was no warning just boom and gone it had good fluid changed regularly it had fluid in it because when it broke it was all over my truck. The 4wd gets used about 3 times a weeks for a short time I live on a farm. Any ideas would be awesome just want to fix the issue not recreate it I have pictures but don't know how to upload them on here if someone could show me would be great as well
