4-lo on '04 6.0

my dads 04 cc 4x4 shortbed psd will not go into lo range if it has pressure on the tires (either fwd or bwd) if you start getting it bogged down in sand and stop to put it in lo it will not go in so we have ended up to turn up the tri-dog while in soft sand because it wont go into low but if you stop on hard packed anything it will pop right in with no problems my mom got into some mud in it a few weeks ago and it did the same thing but i thought she was doing something wrong

Are you guys drunk when you try to get it in low. Reason I ask is because sometimes at the desert (drunk) in my brothers truck we have the hardest time getting it in 4 by low but he has a 6 speed. When sober it works but drunk its a pain.
