OK, this may sound like a stupid question. I'm no mechanic, but I do what I have to do because of funds.
I was replacing the leaky seal on the rear axle of my truck. My Clymers says to repack the bearings. Here is where I scratch my head. Since the bearings are open to the axle, I don't figure the grease will last too long before being diluted with gear oil. Am I correct in this assumption? If so, what is the reasoning to repacking the bearings? Couldn't you just slather them with gear oil then top off the punkin?
I did repack the bearings before reinstalling them, but I am going to replace the parking brake shoes on the other side since I done it on the one already. I'm just thinking that I might save myself some $$$ on a seal if I really don't need it.
Thanks in advance,
