leak - ball joint?

I have old oil and dust mix type build up on the arm that holds the upper and lower ball joints. mostly around the mid to lower ball joint area. the upper looks clean. could this be the ball joint causing this? (drivers side)

Does it smell like crap? literally, it's probably an axle seal causing the gear lube to leak out.
