Front end problem!?

Driving down the road the other day and heard and felt a clunk then sound like grinding metal on the front end. Another clunk and it stopped, happened again yesterday. Stopped and checked the hubs and one side was engauged. Got home pulled the wheels off and both sides moved freely. Checked the wheel bearings no play or noise, what is the possibility that the hubs are being pulled in by vacuum? Maybe a solinoid going bad or something?

Any ideas or help would be great!

I just went through this in my truck. Just systematically check things off the list. Does it happen after a bump? Any vibrations in the cab? Leaking any oil? I would try taking the locking hubs out and see what happens.
