Rear Brakes went South

Saturday night we loaded up my truck with 5 Four Wheelers and a dirt bike to go ride at a friends house out in the country. Just before we left my wife asked to borrow the truck to run back to the house real fast. So I unhooked my trailer and she left. She called a few minutes later and said the truck wouldnt move, so ran home and she was right, the brakes were locked. I gased it really hard, i heard a pop and then it would move again, but you could tell the brakes were not happy. So yesterday i finally had a chance to tear into it. It was Metal to Metal on one side. I ended up replacing both rear roters, pads and the Right Caliper. The pison in the caliper was in pieces. Lucky for me my family owns a shop so i get the parts for cost and i know how to do the labor. Anyway the moral of the story is, if you hear a sligt noise from the rear, you might want to check it. Mine just made noise for about a day or two just when you hit the brakes. Funny, when your brakes arnt metal to metal the fuel mileages goes up, lol.

i had a 73 mach 1 mustang 351c in high school. the brake light was on for like 2 months, and i had no idea what it meant or cared what was wrong. the calipers locked, and i had a fire right in the school parking lot! another dude drove around with an extinguisher in his truck, and put it out for me. he also pulled me back to my driveway. he was taking the mechanics class in the mornings at a vocational school in the county, and told me what was wrong. he told me what i needed to buy, and replace. i bought the parts along with a haynes manual, and did it myself. the car was back on the road in 2 days. i was 17, and that was the beginning of working on my vehicles for me. 20 years later, never been to a mechanic!

Got a quick question for you guys that relates to this topic. One of the things my truck is at the dealer right now for is the brakes. Its an '06 6.0 F250 CC SB. The stopping distance is becoming progressively worse and the drivers side front wheel is always covered in brake dust while the passeneger front is always practically clean. I jacked the truck up and pulled both front wheels off the front axle. I could easily spin the passenger side rotor/hub by hand while the drivers side rotor/hub was impossible to turn by hand, even an inch. I didn't think this was right... I am thinking the drivers side caliper is locked up and the pads are constanly rubbing against the rotor which explains why the drivers side wheel is always covered in brake dust. Dealer tells me it is normal to be able to spin the passenger side rotor by hand and not be able to spin the drivers side rotor by hand?!?! Something with the different lengths of the brake lines and the different pressures!?!? IDK. IS this possible... It sure doesnt make sense to me!

Smells like BS to me! If you can't get satisfaction at that dealership, I would try another one.

Thats exactly what I thought then the dealer told me that. It just doesn't make sense; if one turns by hand, they should both turn by hand. I'll find out tomorrow what they say again when they tear into it some more. I'll let you know. Thanks for the reply.

I JUST ASKED OUR DIESEL TECH ABOUT THIS AND HE SAID CHECK THE CALIPER IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS STICKING OR A PINCHED/BENT HOSE.HE ALSO SAID THEY"BOTH FRONT ROTORS" SHOULD BOTH TURN FREE BY HAND AND COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING AT WHAT THE OTHER DEALER TOLD YOU.THE ONLY OTHER THING IS HUB BEARING OR THAT SIDE'S HUB IS LOCKED BUT NONE OF THAT WOULD EXPLAIN THE BRAKE DUST.
