4x4 with a mind of its own

Ok guys,
I am having a problem with my 4wd. If I put the truck in 4x4 Hi or low and leave it there when I shut the truck off, sometimes when I restart the truck, the 4x4 lights on the dash do not light up and the truck is stuck in whatever selection it was left in when it was shut off. If I let the truck sit for a while eventually the lights will come on on the dash and it works fine. Today it got stuck in 4 low and I had to let it sit for an hour before the lights came on and I could take it out of 4 low. I have replaced the switch already, and tried replacing the relays today and nothing has worked. I do not want to spend the money on the electric motor in the transfer case if it is something else. Any help would be appreciated.

More than likely the shift motor is going out on you. However, it should maintain the last position it was selected to. If all the relays are OK and the switch works fine, it is either a plug/wire or the shift motor. You can get them on eBay and they are good units. Try to exercise your shift motor every few days to give you trouble-free operation.

Here is the link to the link for the ESOF guide.
