Left front end clunking after hard acceleration

I have an 04 350 dually, when i was out having some fun today i started to experience a loud clunking noice coming from the left front wheel following hard acceleration. I had the 4x4 engaged today and wondering if this may be related. The noise only occurs after getting on the go pedal alittle more than average. Durring the decel it clunks 2 or 3 times and then seems fine. Any ideas??

check to make sure the front is still not engaged. reach in and try to turn the front drive shaft. if it doesnt its still locked.this happens at times, i lock and unlock the front hub while trying to turn the front shaft,a couple of times and its free again.

Jack The front of the truck up high enough that tire clears ground place hands at 3 and 9 oclock and try to wabble the tire and again at 12 and 6 if it wobbles you probably have bad hub.

Thanks guys, it appears to have been a hub that didn't fully disengage. The clunking turned to a soft chatter and once i played with engaging and disengaging the 4x4 it seems to have resolved itself. Is there any maintanance or lubrication i can due to prevent this in the future.

I had a manual hub on my 99 that was so stiff i had to turn it with pliers. I read a few posts here on the board, and the trick for me was to simply lock the hubs and drive around in 2WD for about 10 miles. that seemed to lubricate it enough that i could turn it with fingers.

well, it's back. Seems everytime i put it into 4x4 it clunks for sometime following. Today it did it in 4x4 as well. Have i got a bad hub or can i lube them or someting to have them operate better? They can be turned very easily manually but seem to have issue with the switch. I have yet to try running them manually but will try that tomorrow. What disengages them, i know they are vacuum activated.

I havent taken mine back to the dealer for this but 50% of the time I use 4x4 the hubs dont disenguage. I have used auto and manual and it did not make any difference. but now I check to make sure.A friend at work has an 03 and has the same problem.
and ford has replaced his hubs already.you might try backing up a few feet to get em unlocked.
