hubs wont lock automatically or manually

Just wondering if anyone has ever had there hubs on an 05 completely go bad? 4x4 light comes on and shows its engaged but no wheel hopping when turning. Took it in mechanic said hubs were "fried". Just wondering if that's possible and what the best replacement is for a fair cost or if u should look into it more before making a purchase?

Usually they leak vacuum... or the vacuum pump fails, or something else in the PVH system leaks vacuum. It is possible for a hublock to go south, just make sure all the vacuum system is intact and working properly

Ok, thanks. I am totally content with having them be manual hubs, just need 4x4! What is the most cost efficient replacement? I know I can get a set of stocks for around 300$
