4x4 locking hub qustion

I am new to the Ford 4x4 system with the manual hubs. Not sure if they had writing on them at some point but mine is either worn off or didnt have it. I have the electronic 4x4 switch so when I flip it to 4x4 high will it always go into 4x4 or to the manual hubs need turned a certian way? I know on my 79 I had they were on or off hubs but I hear people taking about auto hubs?

You could have either type of hub. Some trucks had the manual locking hubs which have to be turned clockwise to lock them. If you have the auto hubs then all the left or counter clockwise is the auto setting and all the way right or clockwise is the lock setting.

If you have ESOF switch you have auto if you have to put your transfer case manually via a shifter on the floor you have manual hubs.
