front axle tune seal

i was under my truck the other day and noticed a ring hanging around the left front axle shaft between the u-joint and the end of the axle tube. it looks like a seal for the end of the axle tube which has some how fallen out of place. how could this happen and how long will this take to fix? my truck only has 10.8K miles on it.

that is actually a dust seal james, the actual axle seal is right outside the carrier bearing and is pressed in from inside the diff. the one you have torn is to prevent as much dust as possible from getting to those inner seals. to replace it you have to take the hub off and axle out, it is pretty common for those to tear, but not usually on lower milage trucks.........Marc

I did the same, crawled under mine oneday and seen the ring...a month later looked under it again, now it is leaking.

Does this take any special tools to do?

What parts would I need? (Any thing else I need to replace while Ive got that off?

Or should I have blue oval to do it?

I got the same thing going on with mine, but both sides are like that. Where can I get these seals, and how difficult is this to change, or should I wait till they start leaking???
