Front tires scalloped...

I walked past my truck today, and something caught my eye on the front tires. I felt the shoulders(outside) and they are scalloped. I only have 4000 miles on the truck.

I made a long road trip 2 weeks ago, and checked the air pressure before ii left. It was fine all the way around. At highway speeds (70MPH), I felt a little vibration in the front, which hadn't been there before. Then today, i noticed the scalloping.

Should I take it back to the dealer for service? Or should I take it and have it aligned? I don't recall hitting anything, and I don't (haven't had the opportunity) take it off road. Any suggestions?

Smith

What pressure do you have the front tires set at? That can be a huge factor. Mine were close to 50 psi straight off the lot, but that's not near enough. I run 65 in the fronts and that seems about right for max wear. I went 9k before the first rotation and at that point the rears needed relief from my right foot more than the fronts did!

Some people say that 5k is the ideal time to rotate tires on a 4wd. With bad cupping at 4k, I would say you either have the wrong pressure or have cheap tires or a combination of the above. Rotate them to the back and make sure you have enough psi in the front tires. What works best for tire wear isn't the most comfortable in the ride department.

I'm not exactly sure but I believe a bad shock will do it also.

on the fords with a more open tread you have to keep them rotated every 3000 to 5000 miles or else you'll have that problem, when you have the tires rotated have them criscross the fronts to the back and bring the backs straight forward...also if it is wearing more on one side have the truck aligned..hope this helps

The front tires were 70-71 when I checked them. I filled them to 75 psi. Thats directly off the sticker on the inside of the door jamb on the drivers side.

I don't really consider the tires open tread. They are BFG Rugged trail T/A's. While they are a bit more aggressive than the Scorpions I had on my last truck (F250 gasser).

I have a hard time believing what is happening is normal, and rotating the tires will even it out. Seems like something is out of whack. Looking up tire wear on the web, sites tell me that scalloping is caused by worn suspension components. What on earth could be worn in 4000 miles?

Calling the dealer to set up an appointment tomorrow. I'll keep you updated.

I had issues with the tires scalloping on my truck "scorpion's" and didnt like those tires for Mn. weather. I put a set of firestone transforce AT's on and run 65psi in them. The guy who put the tires on for me said the scalloping on the other tires could have been caused by bad shocks, so I put a new set of shocks on the front and rotate them every 5k. I have about 10k on the tires and they show little wear. I also noticed the truck handled much better with the new shocks.I hope this helps.

Could I have worn shocks on a 2006 F250 with 4000 miles? Thats tough to swallow if thats the case. We'll see what the dealer says.

Thanks guys,

Smith

Rotate your tires on a regular basis (Ford say 5000 miles). May want them to check the front end alignment while you are at it. My previous F150 was notorious for cupping the front tires when I missed a couple rotations. I would guess that it isn't much different on the Super Duties, although I have almost 30,000 on them without rotating them. On the dually, all I can do is side to side, can't (or not recommended) cross rotation like I got used to.
