I have an 06 F450 that weighs over 10,000# empty then throw a 36 foot 5er and the ski boat behind that I am 35K gross combined. I pull the Colorado rockies regularly.
I smoked through a set of brakes on the truck around 50K miles. Much more friction surface on the 450 than on the 350 brakes. So I went a different route on the replacement. Replaced Motorcraft with Motorcraft.
But I added a BD Tapshifter to the automatic transmission. The engine braking and control are awesome. I set up the shifter to keep the torque converter locked up on decel. Now I can exit the highway at 75 mph and not touch the brakes until 15 MPH to come to a stop at the top of the ramp.
Not really what you were looking for in an answer, but a possible alternative.
